I think that was never mentioned because people were sticking to just anime songs.  Aeris' theme was indeed a sad one.
But going back to anime, I agree with composer 390.  Hiru no Tsuki from Outlaw Star certainly fits the bill.

For me , I think Braja(Full Metal Alchemist) , Cage Bird ( DN Angel ) and a song of storm and fire (Tsubasa Chronicles)

they're not really songs.. only short melodies, but they're very sad, especially in "music box form"

especially "julia's song" because of how *spoiler* gren dies after viscious get's caught in that explosion right after that music box plays the song so solemly.

I would have to say Aeris' theme from FFVII would have to be a biggie for me. we played it for my marching band's ballad and when we played it at atlantinc coast championships. i had to do everything in my power not to cry because it was beautiful.

and i did it at otakon 2k5 aswell.

I know you're all talkin' about ANIME music here, but I don't know much anime. I like PSquall for his game music. Games are anime too, though. In my opinion, the saddest piece is either Faraway Promise or the Treasure Which Cannot be Stolen, both from Xenogears. Gosh, those songs are beautiful. =)

Haha, sorry, it's a game song. Xenogears. But people were naming off FF songs and Xenogears songs so I had to add it.

Small Two of Pieces is one of my favorite songs. =) I've probably listened to it at least a hundred times. I just never think of it along with other soundtrack songs since it has lyrics and all. It's a tear-jerker, though.

Hmm... don't know really how to say it without making it sound weird, but my brother and I hold a bond alomost like in FMA, so Brajta always tends to make me feel sad... (I probaby sound crazy)

Yoko Kanno - Butterfly - Knockin' On Heaven's Door OST

This song is as beautiful as it is heartbreaking.  Not only did I love this movie, but I loved the antagonist.  When I heard this song, I remember tears rolling down my face.  I just felt so sad for him, and Yoko had to make it worse by giving him a beautiful eulogy in the form of this song.
