Piano Squall`s Original Arrangements
« on: October 19, 2004, 03:38:06 AM »
Many people have expressed an interest in obtaining the sheet music for my original arrangements.  Unfortunately, I have never written a single one of them down, but based on the amount of emails I have been receiving, I think I would like to start.

Over the next few months, I will make all of my original arrangements available for free in the Download section.  Please just be patient with me, each one takes a long time to score, lol.

Fingering is tough for me, too. I didn't do so well my third semester of keyboard class because my instructor Yuki REFUSED to give me fingerings. She said they were a crutch and I needed to learn how to do it on my own.... and I never got the hang of it. My fingers got all knotted all over themselves.... XD I just made stuff up. And, eventually, it started to work because it made sense to me. Then Yuki would try and "correct" me and I'd mess it all up.

Advice: Just go with the flow and make with what's comfy. "What's it matter how I do it as long as I get it right?" has always been one of my isms. ^_^;;

Even more than speed, the real value in fingering is memory.  If you want to learn a song to just play a few times, then the fingering isn`t so important, but if you`d like to hold on to it, then its good to spend a long time in the beginning coming up with a consistent pattern that requires your hand to move as little as possible.  If you do this, your hands will recall the motions long after the song is gone from your memory.

Seriously, You should take the time to learn it correctly. My family was always too poor to get piano lessons, and it's something that I really really really wish I could have had. I'm crutched for doing what's comfy to my hands. I play a lot of piano, but I can't use my thumbs to play. Which apparently, later I found out, are the two most important fingers in piano playing. *shrug* They were uncomfortable for me, so I learned how to play everything without correct fingerings, and without thumbs, but ya know, I can play some really great stuff!! But I know if I had had proper training, i would be able to play as well as Squally.

Wark on!

Just wanted to let you know that I haven't neglected this promise.  I've been working constantly over the last week to write down as many arrangements as I can, and I will have the first 8-10 of them up for you shortly.

Even if you don’t know how to read it, it still helps you visualize the direction and degree of change in the notes.

and length is pretty simple:
hollow = whole note
hollow with line = half note
solid with line = quarter note
solid with line & flag = eighth note
solid with line & 2 flags = sixteenth note
solid with line and 3 flags = thirty-second note
(and a dot to the right increases it’s time by 50% (for example, a half note becomes a three quarters note))

Hmmm... Venus, what was that website you mentioned that gives more information?  I can’t remember...

Gosh, I don't know... I found it through a Google search. If only I can remember what I was searching for. I'll try to find it again. :::salute:::

Edit: Was this it? I Google-searched "how read music" since "to" is a common word, and that was the first result.

Ummm... I’m not sure if that’s the same one.  But it looks good to me.  Thank you, Venus :::salutes back:::

EDIT Oh, yes, it was posted here.  Same site.  Thanks again.

I'm actually starting to learn how to read music now! ^__^ I just discovered that the new midi program I got for my birthday has a set of lessons on reading sheet music AND playing the piano! I swear, I love this program more every day!!  :D
