Practicing...bleh....
« on: December 01, 2007, 10:14:23 PM »
Since we have so many musicians on the forums, I was just wondering... how often do you practice?

*ashamed* I... don't practice. Which I know is a bad thing to do. Sometimes I do, but not very often and not for very long, unless I'm really determined and then, well, it seems longer to me anyway so I don't think there's really a difference.... yeah. Yes, I do realize that that makes me a horrible, terrible, no-good, very bad person.

So? How often?

hmm...lets see. I practice everyday if I can. And when I do practice, I practice for 1-2 hours. But recently, I've been playing lots of games so I haven't been practicing as much. -_- <--- addicted to games

I used to practice at least an hour or two a day, or at least every other day, but then my work schedule exploded and for a few months I couldn't really practice for more than a an hour or two a week, at most.

And yeah, ever since I stopped practicing, even if it was for only a few months, I got really rusty.  I need to start practicing again... ^_^

Here's the breakdown, I have a stop watch to make sure I do the full time. This is also my "weekend" practice, I.E. when I have full time.

20 Minutes= Warm up (all 7 scales, major and minor, chromatic, then in 3rds).
5m= break
20 Minutes= etude 1 (assigned by my teacher or just to get better at it if I'm unfamiliar or have only 1 etude for the week)
5m=break
20 Minutes= etude 2 (same as above)
5m=break
30 Minutes= 1st solo I'm working on
5m= break
30 minutes= 2nd solo I'm working on

If you are on a short amount of time, this is the best way I've found to practice:

10minutes=warmup
20minutes=practice 1st piece of any solo work
20minutes=practice 2nd piece of any solo work

edited: you don't have to practice that much, but taking short breaks in between what you are learning are really helpful. It allows you to play longer, and gives you a chance to just get some water, etc.

I just pratice readign bass cleft on the piano, shifting to 3rd position on the  violin, and playing chords on the piano.  About a good hour or so on the violin and piano.

I love practice. I spend about half of my day on the piano. I also arrange the pieces I'm playing on garage band and import them to my Ipod. Then I listen to them for about the rest of my day, and play the piece with out a piano(sort of like air guitar only it's air piano.) I don't just pretend I'm playing, I'm actually playing it like it's supposed to be played. It scares the crap out of my family, because I tend to fall asleep while doing this and I'll still be playing sub-consciencely, accurately too!

Yeah... I'm a freak aren't I...

Well if singing counts in this situation ... I practice every day to the best of my ability.
