Ghostbusters for the NES. Oh, man, did that one hurt. I mean, you'd think it would be incredibly easy to make at least a mediocre game out of this concept. You've got some guys running around shooting ghosts with laser beams. It's practically made for video games. How hard is it to mess that up?
Pretty hard, but they did it. See, the thing with Ghostbusters was, they didn't bother to program in any levels. So instead, the game would flow like this:
1-Guide your cursor around a blocky map of New York City. Eventually a building will be marked as needing help and you go there.
2-Dull and frustrating driving sequence as you guide the ectomobile to the scene of the ghost infestation. It's the same every time, with you avoiding potholes while you drive down the road.
3-Arrive at the place where the ghosts are. This is also always the same. It's a generic building with two generic ghosts floating in front of it. They don't even try to attack you, so shoot them with your lasers and you've completed the mission.
4-Did steps 1-3 sound like fun? Good, because that's all you'll be doing for the next three hours. Over and over and over and over. You must defeat a certain number of ghosts before the Temple of Zuul opens up, but you're not allowed to know how many, so you just keep plugging away with no idea how long it is until you can advance in the game.
5-After 300 or so generic ghost hunts, the words "GO TO ZUUL BUILDING" will flash on the screen. Engrish aside, you are now alowed to go to bad guy headquarters.
6-Bad guy headquarters is made of stairs. Many, many, many stairs. All the "Zull building" consists of is climbing stairs. Oh, and ghosts attack you while you climb. Oh, and you can't shoot the ghosts or defend yourself in any way. You can only climb further to avoid them. Oh, and you have to alternate pushing the A and B buttons to climb. Oh, and all four ghostbusters climb together, walking single file, making you a huge, slow, easy target for the ghosts, so running away is practically impossible. Oh, and you have to climb 99 flights of stairs. Oh, and if you get hit three times, the game is over, and the game has no continues. You have to START ALL OVER AGAIN.
7-I have no idea. I never made it past the stairs. Supposedly you fight the Marshmallow Man and then the game ends. But I'm sure that part is just as boring as the rest of the game.
