Suikoden
« on: December 12, 2006, 01:29:14 PM »
I haven't seen a Suikoden topic come up in a while, so I just wanted to mention one of my favorites RPG series of all time.  I have enjoyed playing through every title in the Suikoden series, including the recent Suikoden 5, which had a fantastic plot and one really incredible, super-inspiring piece that can only be heard during the good ending.

Although Suikoden 1 and 2 are quite difficult to find these days, if you want to get into the series, the originals are being remade for the PSP.  Suikoden 2 is my personal favorite in the series and certainly one of my favorite RPGs overall.

I've wanted to get into the series, but I wanted to start at the beginning...I'm glad they're remaking them for the PSP so I can start from the beginning.

What type of RPG is it, i.e. action/adventure type, random battles?  Is the combat system well done?  And most of all, storyline's superb?

It's a turn-based, random battles RPG with an excellent battle system.  There are 108 party members that you can get, and certain characters can do combination attacks with each other.  The game focuses heavily on the plot, and all of them have a very linear storyline.

The battle system was good back in the day but all the games are good, i loved part 4 witch i am playing now, reminds me of Legend of Zelda the wind waker with all the sailing.  Part 5 was great but very very slow at the beginning.  the ruins you get witch the story is after is a neat thing like materia from FF7 witch are magic stones.

Yea i love all the suikodens for their unique battle system. I dont know of any other battle system like it where you assign all the moves at the beginning then they play out, and the characters stay in the places that they ended ( 3 and up they do this ). I love the way you can customize the skills by grade lvl and the runes. Only thing i dont like is the weapon system. Too easy to get weapon high and not enough variety to me.

Despite it's awesomeness, I think the Suikoden 5 sales were poor in North America.  I do hope they continue the series, it's really wonderful.

Yes! First one is still the best, i totally agree. I had to re-buy the first one cause my old copy was too scratched up :(. Did you get all 108 stars of destiny in the first one? It took me forever -.-

I cant wait for the remake of I and II to come out for the psp because i can't find the second one anywhere and ive played all the rest.

I love my copies of all of Suikoden. My fiance Carl got me addicted to the series. I'm surrently stuck on Suikoden III after just having chosen Hugo as the flame champion (god I hope I still remember this right). When I finally got my apartment Carl took back Suikoden II so his father could play that one and then he commandeered III so his father could beat that one too!!! *dies* Will I EVER get to finish III?? The world may never know. Though, I'm tempted to play through II again because I can never seem to save the hero's sister, and I can't ever save Gremio either... *falls over* I have such bad timing in those games. It's not fair!!!

Carl is still hanging on to IV and V for me to play when I finally beat III... I need three back, it's like an addiction. Have you seen the artbooks??? The things are so detailed, I have lust over their skills. I'll get around to doing something that massive for the game I'm creating someday. Suikoden IS very inspirational, it was based off an old legend. The original Stars were supposed to be marauders and thieves of some kind. I need to look the legend up.

3 was amazing, i loved the aspect of playing from 4 (badguys included) different aspects of the same story, you really get a feel and understanding of who the characters are and why they do what they do.  However those who have 1 & 2 claim that they are even better, which is quite intriguing. Sadly, 4 did not grip me at all. 5 However shows good promise, I'm a bit o ways through it now, yet i have trouble picking it back up, but i seem to be that way with all rpgs lately.
