I really enjoyed the gameplay. The battle system took a little getting used to, but once I did I found myself staying in an area for HOURS after I should have moved on. Man, I'm always at least 20 levels above what is normal for an area.
I liked the Gambit system, too. I liked being able to walk up to a monster, put the controller down, and watch my handiwork go at it. Very nice B-)
But...overall...the game didn't do anything for me. It lacked the deep characters and the intimate relations between them that FF is famous for. Except Balthier. Balthier...love and win in a nutshell. I mean, there are good characters, but it just didn't go in-depth enough for me. I didn't feel as involved as I do with other FF's.
Not to say that I didn't like the political-based storyline of FFXII. I did. It wasn't what I was used to, but it was good in it's own ways. I loved that XII made you THINK. Usually its just go by whatever the prompts tell you...but with XII...it was deeper than that. You had to think to get anywhere in the game, and you had to think harder to understand what was going on. That was, I must admit, very nice.
