YAOI can also be used to generalize the entire shounen-ai genre."
The point is not what the textbook meaning of the word is. The point is that most ppl hear the word yaoi and think 'boyXboy sex'. If you wanna nitpick then gay doesn't refer a homosexual; it means happy. You have to remember that slang plays a very important role in the way we percieve words.

And can we please get back on topic?

Pardon me while I giggle like a school girl here.  We ALWAYS go off topic--interesting, educational, and hilarity conversations ensue.

Well..  the rest of us do.

Another recommendation: Haibane Renmei.  I'm currently halfway through Tsubasa Chronicles right now, and I'm fascinated.

I third the Utena recommendation. Very.Good.Show.Period.

Ghost in the Shell- Very good movie. I have no idea how to describe it other than government intrigue, lots of computers, and a puppetmaster. (I'm bad at summerizing)

Record of Lodoss War OVA- If you like classical fantasy (elves, dwarves, wizards, magic etc) then you should watch this. It follows a young knight-in-training named Parn through his adventures in Lodoss as he struggles to prove himself worthy. After rescuing the king's daughter, everything esclates and he finds himself participating in a huge war against the Marmo (the bad guys), fighting dragons and saving all of Lodoss from destruction. Dragons, fantasy beings and a good storyline, 13 episodes; watch and enjoy.

Heat Guy J- Darn MTV2 for not finishing this series!!! Anyway, Heat Guy J... it's about a boy name Daisuke and his android named J. Together, they combat crime in the city-nation of Judoh. Their biggest advisary is Claire Lionelli, the Vampire (or leader guy... or godfather geesh) of a powerful mafia that manipulates the stock market, tries to blow up the city with high intensity explosives and a bunch more crazy stuff. They end up befriending a werewolf named Boma who is looking for his sister? He appears every now and then but I think he has a bigger role near the end of the series. His attribute, randomly appearing and asking "Have you seen, my bunny?" I wish I could tell you more, but again, MTV2 never finished the series, I only have the first 4 episodes and everything else is fun. But if you find a DVD pick it up and watch. 26 episodes, good animation, lovely music.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust- I feel that if this movie were a TV series, it would be very cool. Anyway, a much improvement over the first VHD movie, Bloodlust once again follows D, a dunpeal (half human half vampire) as he tracks down a man's only daughter, Charlotte, who was seemingly kidnapped by a powerful vampire named Meier Link. To add his troubles, D has to up with competition from the Marcus Brothers, a vampire slaying squad sent on the same rescue mission. As the story progresses, we find out Charlotte wasn't kidnapped and in actuality is running away with her vampire love to escape the world where vampires are feared and hated. Meier had implored the help of another vampire, Queen Carmella, to arrange for a ship to take them to the City of the Night but all is not as it seems. In the end, D catches up to Meier and the final battle for love insues. Mystery, romance, action, a bit of angst, pretty animation and nice music. Great movie.

Cromartie High School- There is no way I could describe this fully. This is just something you have to see to believe. Basically, a bunch of delinquents at Japan's baddest high school; are they really has bad as they seem? Nope. Basically, just a bunch of teens dealing with life in a not so normal fashion. The series is hilarious and very addictive. Currently running on Anime Network OnDemand for any Comcast folks out there.

I have a ton more but I don't think I can think up summaries for them all so I'll just list them.

Rurouni Kenshin, RahXephon, The Vision of Escaflowne, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, X/1999 TV, Sailor Moon, Trigun, Hamtaro (yes, Hamtaro. Gotta love the cute stuff), Fishigi Yuugi, Mobile Suit Gundam 0079, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo OVA and Tenchi Universe, Armitage III, InuYasha, Last Exile, and Yami no Matsuei (Descendents of Darkness).

In my defense, that's not the most fair example.  Gay is an English word.  Most people already know that gay means both "happy" and "male homosexual".  Yaoi is a Japanese word, and not everyone is familiar with it.  And I hardly think it's a bad thing to tell the whole story.

These recomendations are pretty good, but there's one series in particular I see left out.  Gundam SEED.  I've seen quite a bit of anime, and I'd say that Gundam SEED is one of the greatest series ever.

Naruto, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam SEED. The four best shows made since the new millenium started.

For older stuff, I recommend Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Escaflowne, among others that have already been mentioned.

And for shows that no one has summarized yet (unless I somehow missed them):

Samurai Champloo - A wandering samurai (Jin), a crazy dude from Okinawa (Mugen), and a waitress (Fuu) meet up due to a weird chain events. The setting is historical fiction, sometime between the 1600's and 1800's. The three of them go on a journey. Stuff happens... like sword fights, and romance and drama, and comedy, and baseball, and lots of craziness in general. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe (the Cowboy Bebop dude), Samurai Champloo has a cool hip-hop style, lots of stylized action, and *gasp* a good ending! (An anime with a good ending? What a novel idea...)

Genshiken - I'm too lazy to type more summaries, so, this summary is from anidb.net:
Based on a popular 4-panel comic about the Japanese otaku lifestyle, this manga follows Sasahara Kanji as he dives face first into a world of anime, manga, video games, pornographic doujinshi, and the like. Kio Shimoku pokes fun at every element of the otaku world, so sit back and enjoy the ride. This is an anime for hardcore fans, with very complicated references that will test your knowledge of all things otaku.

Fafner - Another description stolen from anidb.net:

"Are you there?"

It was a peaceful and calm island... the blue sky and the blue sea reach as far as one can see. For the boys and girls living there, another day was supposed to begin as usual.

"Are you there?"

That one day, the boys and girls suddenly began to receive a message. The moment they replied, a stream of light flashed in the blue sky. Seemingly beautiful, yet bringing a severe reality upon them... The enemy suddenly appeared, too sudden to even accept this reality at the mercy of that wave.
How should they have replied in order to live?

A boy, Makabe Kazuki, resolves his mind to ride into Fafner in order to live and to escape from this sore reality...

So basically... it's an Evangelion/RahXephon-esque post-apocalyptic robot show, about teenagers who pilot mecha and fight against aliens. But it's VERY well done.

Volumes 1-4 of Samurai Champloo and volume 1 of Fafner area already available on DVD from Geneon. And supposedly, Media Blasters released volume 1 of Genshiken a few days ago.

If there's baseball (as we know it today, at least), it's got to be the 1800s, seeing as how it wasn't invented until then. o_o
