Howl's Moving Castle
« on: June 28, 2005, 10:06:00 AM »
Since seeing the movie, I've been really interested in checking out the book by Diana Wynne Jones. I've been hoping it might answer a few questions that popped up in my mind. Has anyone read/started to read it?

An actual book. It was the basis for the movie.

Is that the first instance of a regular novel being made into anime? It's the first I've seen...

I would say not.. At least in the fact that western novels have at least inspired several series/movies. Laputa: Castle in the Sky (Gulliver's Travels), Hellsing (Dracula, H.P. Lovecraft works).

Howl's Moving Castle in the new Studio Ghibli film. This is the simplest summary I could find:
Eldest of three sisters in a land where it is considered to be a misfortune, Sophie is resigned to her fate as a hat shop apprentice until a witch turns her into an old woman and she finds herself in the castle of the greatly feared wizard Howl.

‘Crest/Banner of the Stars ‘started as a novel, then anime, then manga (so confusing)
And um...They say Nadia is supposed to be 'inspired by' 2000 Leagues under the Sea.
I keep thinking there’s some Samurai one too, I just can’t remember which….

My guess is that there's tons more.
(I wouldn't  be surprised if 'Densha Otoko' was turned into an Anime, such a cute story.....)

And I think I’ll go find the book for Howl....Yay for Ghibli....And Dianne Jones....

Weren't Battle Royale and Ringu both novels at first? They're also manga. I just thought Onion meant Western novels. XD

They're currently showing "Howls Moving Castle" at the Tivoli in UCity/Loop--so I'm going to try and see if my BF wants to see it with me this weekend.

They still don't have it playing in any theaters here. ._. I admit I saw the subtitled version before it came out, though.

An uber voice actor. He's played Zelgadiss in Slayers, Alucard in Hellsing, Tsume in Wolf's Rain, Touga in Utena, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, etc. etc.
