Elfen Lied was ... wow. One of the most disturbing animes that I've ever seen. I cried, I cheered, my stomach lurched many a moment, and I even laughed a couple times watching that one...
The only other "dark" animes I own are
Petite Cossette,
Serial Experiments Lain, and the first volume of
Now and Then, Here and There. I saw
Perfect Blue and, man, that was very scary/dark/disturbing. I hate non-con/incest a LOT. In fact, I've thought special tortures should be devised for perpetrators of such crimes. (Not very PC of me, at all)
So yes, I do think somethings CAN be left to the imagination (mine is VERY detailed and disturbing at times, as my fanfic readers would know) like they used to in the days of black-and-white. Fade to black ... the unspeakable occured!!
The opening scene of
Elfen Lied reminded me an awful lot of an early cut scene in the original controversial RPG
Xenogears(PS). You see a girl with a metal mask on and a bunch of guys torn apart by her mind. (First time I saw a bloody cut-scene in an RPG) It was AWESOME!! So, perhaps, the EL beginning brought back the nostalgia of that game for me. (What do you think, DarkHalo? I know you're a true Xenophile from way back)
You know who the main character reminded me of, really?? Chi from
Chobits. (Never watched or read though I own the manga) Didn't she always say "Chi" like Lucy's innocent other half Nyu always says, "Nyu." But wow, even the "horns" look alike! o.O SOooo, yeah...
"Lilium" is one the most beautiful opening themes EVER!! I don't know if we'd love it half as much if it were in a cutsey anime. I'd still like it a lot, but that song added a SOUL to
Elfen Lied. (Especially in the flashbacks) Without it ... I couldn't have had a true "breather" in between the eps. *heh* It was the inner good/humanity in "life," even when it can be tragic.
Something else I was reminded of while watch
Elfen Lied ... an american movie called,
The Power of One. (A young man grows up in South Africa amidst Nazis and kicks some butt to fight for ALL peoples ... yeah. I can't summarize it, really.) When the main character was young, he had similar things happen to him like Lucy. (The bullying, animal torture) However, this guy turned out AWESOME amidst his numerous tragedies. I was always fighting for Lucy and wanting her to triumph (Not like when I watch
Death Note and want Light to get caught *heh*), but that's because I believe in the power of good (and one, heh).
So to summarize: Elfen Lied = SUPERF'DUP/DISTURBING Chobits/Xenogears/Power of One ripoff with the most beautiful musical theme ever. *lol* Not really.

But it did sound kinda funny.
I need to watch Elfen Lied again.
*a wind carries her away*
