Woot. Haven't had time to read the new one yet. Will soon probably. Actually. :: checks watch :: Yup, it is time to reread the whole series again! It has been a while this time.

I always skip the torture part in the first book though, when the Mord-Sith has him. It is just too depressing.

I think the Mord-Sith torture scenes really put Rand's- I mean Richard's character into persepective and lend him alot of depth.

I don't think it's that depressing, and you should read it at least once.. I assume you have...

I think it's the author's ability to just lay it out like that that really lends a unique and powerful tone to his writing...

Anyone notice parallels between Sword of Truth and Wheel of Time?

No, because sword of truth was very good right from the start, and I had had to give up on wheel of time after 1 and a half books because it was just nowhere near as good  :P

I read book one of WoT on the recommendation of an english major friend that I have here.  He said it was by far his favorite series.  Then, he read book 10, and now he refuses to ever touch another WoT book again.   He said it was the worst piece of literature he had ever read in any genre.  I can't comment other than that I enjoyed book 1, but for such a die-hard fan to give up like that, it must have been a total bomb.   Did you read it Jon?

It's been awhile since I've read the series...

I'm pretty easy to please, so I give it a 7-8...

There are bad moments, and there are moments that give you goosebumps... so there are some redeeming qualities..

The last WoT book I read was Winter's Heart...

the series sorta started off good, then got better, then got worse, then got better, and just progressively started getting worse and worse...

so yeah, I'm not surprised that #10 blew... didn't read it, unless Winter's Heart was 10 instead of 0...

I still think I liked WoT better than SoT... but that's just me... I like Rand al'Thor much better than Richard...  there's just a certain quality to Richard that irritates me on some level.

Of course, SoT is still a great series.

I've read both series, and both have books that were incredible as well as those that...failed to capture the imagination.  Both series have the challenge of starting out wonderfully--"Wizard's First Rule" is by far my favorite Goodkind book (although "Faith of the Fallen" came close) while "The Eye of the World", from what I have heard, is the undisputed masterpiece of Jordan's series.  Some of Jordan's later books also come close to surpassing the first:  "Dragon Reborn" (Book 3) comes to mind.

You just need to read through the boring parts sometimes, trusting the author hasn't lost 'it'.
In the midst of the word he was trying to say,
In the midst of his laughter and glee,
He had softly and suddenly vanished away -- -
For the Snark was a Boojum, you see.

Hear hear... It really depresses me when people don't like book 1 of WoT.
