What game got you started on RPGs?
« on: November 28, 2003, 11:31:19 PM »
Mike already knows the answer to mine   .  I'll spare you guys the story, but the game was Breath of Fire 2.  To this day, playing that game is one of the best memories I have.  It was just so much fun!

FInal Fantasy 6, I had let a friend borrow Mario Kart for it back in elementary school. I picked up from my friends save and had no idea what was going on, so I forced myself to learn it, and lo and behold I've been addicted ever since.

I never did get my Mario Kart back though...

HAHA!  Great story!  Both of those are classic games.  I have to say, though, to me it will always be FF3.  I played it on SNES when it was still called FF3 and that's what I will always call it.

Chrono Trigger.  Piggybacking off a L99 New Game+ made for an easy entrance into RPGs.  Still a great one nonetheless.

I fell in love with FFVIII my freshman year of high school and was completely hooked after that. ::Waits for all the FFVII fans to come at her in an angry mob::

Although the Final Fantasy series was incredible... and Final Fantasy VII had a major part in my rpg fandom, I have to say Chrono Trigger, hands down. I remember playing it emulated on my friends computer becaues my SNES was in NY... Even emulated, it was a beautiful game...

There was something of a magical quality to those old SNES ones, wasn't there?

My first experience with RPG's was playing FFIII with a friend, who will remain nameless, on the SNES.  He basically threw me into the game, with no knowledge of what in the world was going on.  I apparently was playing a boss, and did something wrong.  He proceeded to turn off the game and said that I sucked, and I didn't play the game again.  I finally picked up an RPG again years later with Suikoden II and FF8, basically together, and I have been playing ever since.

I started with FFVII, and just like Natalie, I got hooked really after FFVIII, and really really when Cloud dressed up as a woman... that was just too funny to not love. :P

You need me

Secret of Mana, all the way. Then FFIII (or VI if you are anal).
I am not much of a powergamer. I did just beat FFX, and today bought Xenosaga though. And FFX-2 is on it's way for Christmas. I figure I bought the damn PS2, might as well use it...

Oh yeah, I'm with you on Secret of Mana.  Great game.  Great game!  Not particularly deep, but the gameplay was great.

Also, I totally agree about FFIII.  When I played it on SNES with Mike it was FFIII, and I don't care how many times they rerelease it or how many actually came out in Japan.  It will forever be FFIII!

I'm still a youngin' ... you should've seen me when I was playing FFVII for the first time and was like "what do you MEAN don't attack the scorpion while its tail is up!?" loooool) ^.^

EarthBound.  Which might seem a little strange, since it actually seems like the sort of game that would turn people AWAY from RPG's.  :D  But something about its down-to-earth humor and its funky battle system/music really drew me in.  I was addicted from the first time I played it at my friend's house.

And then came FF V...I had a LOT of fond memories of that game from when I was younger, so it had a bit of an extra nostalgic/sentimental value for me.

And of course, FF VII...the newb's FF.  Materia confused me for the longest time, until I realized that it actually WAS as simple as it looked. :D  I still think it's one of the best magic systems ever created.

Super Mario RPG is also a good one to start with before getting into the more "hardcore" stuff.  Cute, easy, and above all, FUN.
