Cool Edit Pro is what I primarily use.

For audio recording and editing, I really like Cool Edit Pro.
As for composition, I would recommend Sonar 3 PE. It comes with many nice plug-ins including the wonderful Lexicon Pantheon reverb plugin.
For DXi plug-in instruments, Edirol has a nice line of inexpensive products.
For scoring and printing, Finale 2003.

There are many others out there, but these are what I'm stuck on now...

hey. I use a program called "Audacity". Its not bad - i can record from many different sources. it also has a lot of fucntions including noise removal, amplify, normalize, equalize, bass boost etc.. as well as being able to cut and delete. i made some good recordings with it. If i compose something [not often i have to say] I use Sibelius 2 [well, we use at school].
